‘Occupy’ Takes On Riverdale

March 10, 2012

The ‘Occupy’ movement may have departed some of the nation’s most popular cities, but it has a new home. It’s found its newest challenge within the pages of the Archie comic book in the fictional Riverdale. ‘Occupy’ is just the latest effort by Archie comics to include more real world issues into Archie’s world. The move has been met with some resistance as critics determine whether Archie has a “liberal agenda”.

According to the CEO Jon Goldwater and writer Alex Segum the folks at Archie are just making a more consorted effort to have Riverdale reflect realty. “The comics remain true to their rots and are all ages and funny, but having the stories reflect today makes them more relatable.”

In the issue Archie again struggles to choose between Betty and Veronica who have taken fairly predictable sides. Veronica has sided with her father against the protests and Betty is more sympathetic to their cause because she’s seen her family’s business struggle in the financial downturn. It’s a smart move to make the issue into something that readers already understood about Archie. He’ll have to decide again who he sees himself as.

The issue will be drawn by Gisele Lagace who inks an adult web comic called Manage a 3. She’ll be drawing more characters than usual for the issue, as more of the town becomes engaged on both sides of the ‘Occupy’ movement.  It looks like it’ll be a gorgeous issue.

    Hey There Brittspolitical,
Cool Post, Anyone who knows anything about history realizes that the longer civil unrest is allowed to get out of hand, the more violence will occur. Perhaps, this is because large demonstrations attract the angriest folks with revenge motives. It’s hard to say, but historically we know this to be true. This is also probably why governments, both good and bad try to put down the riots, protests, marches, and events as soon as possible, or hope they just lose steam. Okay so, let’s talk.
    Good Job!
