‘Doonesbury’ Takes On Texas

March 12, 2012

Newspapers across the country are refusing to run a new Doonesbury strip, which tackles a Texas law, which forces women seeking abortions to receive sonograms.  So far more than a dozen newspapers have voiced concerns about the cartoon that features a woman being asked to wait in “the shaming room” of a clinic where “a middle aged male state legislature” will see to her.

The newspapers that determined to run the series moved it over to their Op-ed sections. Doonesbury writer and creator Gary Trudeau is defending the cartoon saying he felt compelled to responds to the way Republicans are undermining women’s healthcare rights. Trudeau was actually surprised by the outcry, and claims [sic] “I write the strip to be read, not removed.”

The shock itself is somewhat surprising considering that the comic strip consistently satirizes current events. Hot button issues, like Texas’s atrocious new law is a normal happenstance that I for one didn’t find all that surprising.
