Web Parody Asks the Real Mitt Romney to Please Stand Up?

March 25, 2012

During the last presidential election cycle, Hugh Atkin made a name of himself for creating funny, and occasionally inappropriate, political parodies on YouTube. Atkin’s abrupt abandonment of the work left many to speculate on when he’d resurface.

It seemed unlikely; Akins is currently studying law at Oxford University after working for the Australian Broadcast Corporation and deciding against video as a career.  Until two days ago, when Atkin released “Will The Real Mitt Romney Please Stand Up,” a mash-up of video clips set to the Eminem song, “The Real Slim Shady.” The full recreation replaces all of Eminem song with quotes by Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, Donald Trump, and others.

Akin replaces “my bum is on your lips, my bum is on your lips” with “my dog is on the roof, my dog is on the roof,” in one of the videos finer moments while managing to fit in key media foibles of the Romney campaign.

The video also combines various clips to create false Romney quotes like this one: “with regards to abortion, uh, you can choose your own adventure.” Spliced throughout and bookending the video are numerous clips of President Obama asking: Will the real Mitt Romney please stand up? I repeat, will the real  Mitt Romney please stand up?”

As of this writing, it just passed 1 million and a half views on YouTube.
