Hillary Clinton’s Journey To Unexpected Coolness

May 23, 2012

Four years ago no one could have expected that Hillary Clinton’s approval rating would hover in the high 60s. That’s influenced not only by her job performance, but also by an outward humanizing of her image. In the past year she’s gotten increasing levels of coverage that can be traced back to a photo of a legendary reaction to a historic event.

As the helicopter began having internal issues       during the operation that ended in Osama bin Laden’s death the President recalls Clinton putting her hand over her mouth humanizing both the moment and the Secretary. Although it took a year for the Secretary to attribute her reaction to the emotional high of the moment instead of seasonal allergies, it’s proved to be the beginning of a reputation overhaul.

Let’s take a look at the ways Hillary has embraced the very things that mark her as dork—and why that makes her hip.

She Goes Out Sans Make-up

During a trip to India showed up to several events looking very un-made-up. She wore a bit of lipstick and not much else—no fancy hair-do no and sans pancake powder. And she looked good, different from her normal polished appearance, but still good. It’s not only good since, but good publicity—she’s comfortable enough in who she is and how she looks to show that regardless of what cameras may lurk near.

Like she told CNN:

She Wears Sunglasses Indoors

When most people wear sunglasses indoors they end up looking hungover or a bit like the undead. In a photo taken by Diana Walker of Time of Clinton on board a military aircraft checking her cellphone, wearing sunglasses, and looking like a boss went viral almost a year after it was taken inspired a meme and a lot of speculation. She’d never looked better.

She Out Charms Hollywood’s Most Charming Actor:

For the past few seasons of How I Met Your Mother, Jason Segel has been responding to reporters asking about the unrevealed mother by telling them she will ultimately be Hillary Clinton. Segel also told Us Weekly he’d love for Clinton to appear in a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshal (which isn’t an actual project).

In response Clinton decided to not only get in on the joke, but to play a little hard ball as well by sending a personal letter to the actor himself.

She Dances the Night Away in Columbia:

A series of leaked and blurry photographs of the Secretary of State drinking cerveza and dancing with her female aides while at a summit in Colombia cemented her new image for younger voters.  Accompanied by security agents, Clinton relaxed and danced the night away after spending a day at the President’s side during the 30-nation summit.

She Can Take A Joke:

Early in April the internet began buzzing news of fantastic new Tumblr called Texts From Hillary which painted the Secretary as a sunglasses swiping, world-dominating Boss. After the meme took off, the Secretary actually contributed her own idea for a post on the site: “ROFL @ ur tumblr! g2g—scrunchie time. Ttyl?..”.

After years of working just a smidge too hard for our attention Hillary has finally started doing what all truly ‘cool’ people do—not caring whether or not we think she’s cool.

FYI that photo was proven to have been staged for PR purposes.

I couldn’t find that in any of my research before and since you made the comment. There was a rumor that it was a staged photo, but no reputable sources endorsed the idea.
